Handcrafted grass-fed tallow soap and roman chamomile balm for eczema and sensitive skin, made in Taranaki, NZ

What's happening beneath the surface

Sensitive skin, eczema and psoriasis are words that cover a lot of ground — they present differently from person to person, dry and itchy for some, red and inflamed for others. What works for one skin won’t work for another, so it’s worth understanding your own before reaching for anything new. What research does show consistently is that compromised, reactive skin often has an imbalance in its fatty acid composition — not enough of the saturated fats that give skin its structure and resilience. Without them, the barrier becomes weaker, less able to hold moisture, more vulnerable to irritation and inflammation. That same imbalance tends to show up in the skin’s microbiome too — fewer of the beneficial bacteria that help regulate inflammation and support the barrier’s recovery, making the cycle harder to break from either direction.

How does tallow help sensitive skin?

Tallow is rich in exactly those fatty acids, in proportions remarkably close to your skin’s own sebum. Grass-fed tallow goes further again, carrying more linoleic acid, a naturally anti-inflammatory compound, especially valuable for skin that’s easily irritated. Whether in a soap or a balm, it works with the skin barrier rather than sitting on top of it — tallow soap cleanses without stripping away what a compromised skin microbiome needs to recover, while a tallow balm replenishes what that same skin is often missing.

What botanicals support sensitive skin?

For skin that’s dry, itchy or inflamed, that compatibility is the whole story — and the botanicals paired with tallow in balms and skincare are chosen for what they actually do, not how they smell. Roman chamomile is calming and anti-inflammatory, easing both the skin and the stress that often travels with a flare. Calendula supports the skin’s own repair process, and annatto brings antioxidant support alongside it. St John’s Wort carries a long history with irritated, inflamed skin, often paired with frankincense and helichrysum for their own roles in calming and repair. Blue tansy stands apart for its own strength as an anti-inflammatory, used on its own where skin needs something more targeted.

A simpler way in

Tallow skincare doesn’t ask much of you, which is often the point when skin’s already under strain. Patch test on a small area first and wait 24 hours — reactive skin can respond unpredictably, even to something this compatible. From there, the timing matters more than the routine: apply after a warm shower while skin is still slightly damp, which helps everything absorb rather than sit on the surface. For patches that flare persistently, a second, thicker layer of balm gives that area a bit more to work with. Less is usually more here — one gentle soap, one balm, applied consistently, tends to do more than a cabinet full of separate products

That simplicity comes from my own experience, not just research. It’s part of why Fatglow exists in the first place. If you’d like to go deeper, here’s more of what I’ve written:

When to see a professional

Everything I make is meant to support and comfort skin, not diagnose or treat what’s underneath it. If skin is open, weeping or infected, or symptoms feel severe, persistent or are getting worse, please see a doctor or dermatologist first. Gentle skincare has its place alongside proper medical care, never instead of it.

Questions about sensitive skin, eczema & psoriasis

How is tallow skincare different from a steroid cream?

Steroid creams work by suppressing inflammation directly, and can be essential for flare-ups — but long-term reliance can lead to steroid dependency, where skin struggles without them. Tallow works differently: it doesn’t suppress anything, it simply supports the skin barrier with fatty acids your skin already recognises. The two aren’t a straight swap, but tallow can be a gentle, ongoing option alongside or after medical care.

Psoriasis, like eczema, involves a compromised skin barrier and often benefits from the same gentle, fatty-acid-rich approach. Fatglow products aren’t intended to treat or cure psoriasis, but many people find the same simple, compatible formulas comfortable for both conditions

Yes — the same gentle, fatty-acid-rich formulas that work on the body work well on the face too, though facial skin is often a little more reactive. Start with a smaller amount, and the botanical balms (Roman Chamomile especially) are a gentle place to begin for sensitive facial skin.

Is tallow soap safe for babies with eczema?

Many parents find tallow soap gentle enough for baby eczema, given its simple, skin-compatible fatty acid profile. As with any new product on a baby’s skin, patch test first and speak with your doctor if their eczema is severe or persistent.

Everyone’s skin responds differently, so there’s no fixed timeline — some people notice softer, calmer skin within days, others need a few weeks of consistent use before the barrier genuinely rebuilds. Sticking with one gentle soap and one balm, rather than switching often, gives skin the best chance to adjust and show real change.

Eczema Relief Soap and Baby Glow Soap are gentle starting points for very reactive skin, while Pure Bliss and Hemp & Milk suit the body more broadly. For balms, Roman Chamomile is the calmest choice for eczema-prone skin, St John’s Wort suits skin that needs extra support, and Blue Tansy is worth reaching for when inflammation runs higher than usual.
