Tallow in 2026 - The Beauty Industry Finally Caught Up

Flat lay of natural skincare ingredients including botanical oils, rosemary, oats, clay and an amber jar of grass-fed tallow cream on a wooden surface - Fatglow handcrafted skincare New Zealand

The skincare industry is having a reckoning.

After years of over-exfoliation, skin cycling and 10-step routines, the conversation is finally changing. Chronic barrier disruption is being called out for what it is — damage dressed up as self-care. The instant-gratification era is over. In 2026, the beauty industry is looking for something it should have been looking for all along. Ingredients with depth. Biological credibility. Long-standing value that no trend cycle can manufacture.

They are, finally, describing tallow.

Tallow Skincare Routine For Eczema - What Nobody Is Telling You

A person holding dried herbs in their hands against a natural background

Eczema affects one in eight New Zealand children and one in twelve adults. That’s not a fringe condition. That’s a significant portion of the population waking up with skin that itches, weeps, flares and refuses to settle — often despite doing everything they’ve been told to do. The standard advice is familiar: an emollient cream, a steroid when it flares, a gentle liquid soap. And for infected eczema, diluted bleach baths — a medically endorsed practice that many families find themselves turning to out of desperation.

How To Heal Your Skin Barrier With Botanicals And Tallow

Grass fed tallow soap ingredients including clays and botanicals handmade in Taranaki, New Zealand - Fatglow

There’s a quiet irony at the heart of modern skincare. The routines sold to us as the path to healthy, glowing skin are, for many people, the very thing breaking it down. The ten-step routine. The acids. The retinoids. The vitamin C. Each one marketed as a transformation — and each one, when overused or layered without care, capable of doing real damage to the skin barrier that every other product depends on.

Why Tallow Balm Works for Eczema - And Why Botanical Makes It Better

Grass-fed roman chamomile tallow balm in a glass jar, handmade in Taranaki, New Zealand for eczema and sensitive skin

There’s something worth considering. Eczema as a widespread chronic condition is largely modern. Humans have been applying animal fats to skin for thousands of years — it was the default before synthetic skincare existed. Your skin didn’t evolve alongside sulphate cleansers and petroleum creams. It evolved alongside fats it recognises.

That’s not a romantic idea. It’s biology.

Mother's Day Gifts Worth Giving - Tallow Skincare NZ

Fatglow Mother's Day luxury gift box tallow skincare New Zealand

Mothers are famously good at looking after everyone else. Their own bathroom shelf tells a different story — whatever was on special, whatever was left over, whatever someone else didn’t finish. Her skin deserves better than that.

Tallow soap is not what most people picture when they think of luxury skincare. But it should be. Grass-fed tallow mirrors the natural composition of human skin — the same fatty acids, the same vitamins, absorbed rather than sitting on the surface. It doesn’t strip. It doesn’t disrupt. It works with the skin’s own biology in a way that most conventional soap simply doesn’t. The difference is felt from the first wash — and that’s exactly what makes it worth giving.

Why Tallow is the Original Zero Waste Skincare

Grass-fed New Zealand tallow melting down in small batches at Fatglow

Zero waste beauty is having a moment. Brands are rushing to claim sustainability credentials — recycled packaging, carbon offsets, plant-based formulations. But before zero waste was a marketing term, it was simply how people lived. And tallow was at the centre of it.

Red Velvet Oil - When Waste becomes Luxury

Tallow Glow cream - rose Fatglow Red velvet oil - botanical tallow skincare NZ

Some ingredients find their way into a formulation because they’re trending. Red velvet oil found its way into Fatglow because nobody else was using it. That’s still largely true. Red velvet oil — extracted from tomato seeds — remains one of the most underused botanicals in skincare. Which is extraordinary, because what it does for skin is anything but ordinary.

Is Tallow Soap Good for Eczema?

Handcrafted grass-fed tallow soap and roman chamomile balm for eczema and sensitive skin, made in Taranaki, NZ

The short answer is yes — for many people, and for good reason. But like anything with skin, the longer answer is more interesting.

Eczema is a word that covers a lot of ground. It presents differently from person to person — dry and itchy for some, red and inflamed for others, weeping and infected for others. What works for one skin won’t work for another, and it’s important to understand the difference before reaching for any new product.

Steroid Dependency & Sensitive Skin - Why Tallow made Sense to me.

Fatglow Pure Bliss tallow soap with coconut cream, handmade in New Zealand, unscented and natural

Topical steroids are prescribed for good reason. For eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, they reduce inflammation and give skin the chance to settle. Used appropriately, for short periods, they do their job. The difficulty arises when short-term use becomes long-term dependency — and that cycle is more common than many people realise.

In New Zealand, eczema affects up to 25% of children and 7% of adults. It often appears early, with over 60% of cases developing in the first year of life alone. Most are treated with topical steroid creams as a first response. For many that’s appropriate and effective. But for some — myself included — it becomes a longer story.

Pine Tar, Tallow & Colloidal oats - why this combination works so well for Eczema

Fatglow Eczema Relief tallow soap with pine tar and colloidal oats, handmade in New Zealand, gentle for eczema and itchy skin

Some remedies have been around so long they’ve become part of family memory.

Growing up in New Zealand, Pinetarsol was a household name. My grandmother used to add it to our baths for everything — eczema, chicken pox, dermatitis, sunburn. I had eczema as a child and I know first hand that particular misery – the skin that won’t settle. That familiar woody scent meant relief was coming. It was steered by one simple idea: that pine tar, drawn from nature, had a genuine ability to calm troubled skin. That memory never left me. And when Fatglow was born, creating something that might offer the same relief to others that it gave to me as a child felt like the most natural place to start.

Tallow Soap for Baby Eczema

Baby Glow tallow soap the best tallow soap NZ for babies with eczema unscented handmade in Taranaki New Zealand by Fatglow

Baby skin is different. It’s thinner, more permeable and still developing its natural barrier. In the first years of life that barrier is genuinely vulnerable – more easily disrupted, more easily irritated, more likely to react to what it comes into contact with. That sensitivity can show up in many ways. Dryness, redness, cradle cap, eczema – conditions that are remarkably common in New Zealand babies and that sometimes persist into childhood. What touches a babies skin matters more than most product labels suggest.

The Luxury of Tallow Soap-Why Handmade Stands Apart

Walk through any supermarket in New Zealand and you’ll see shelves filled with cleanses – solid soaps, liquid soaps, foaming washes, body cleansers in every scent and colour. At first glance, they all appear to serve the same purpose – they clean your skin. But the way they are made and what they are made from, varies greatly. Long before this range of options existed, tallow soap was a common household staple in New Zealand. It was made because it worked, because the ingredients were readily available and because the result was dependable. That simplicity still holds true today.

Quietly Luxurious Soap with Clays & Botanicals

Nature gives generously. In my soap room these gifts from nature become more than decoration – they become part of a considered process that reflects how they’re grown and used.

Why Tallow is the foundation of my handmade soap

14th January 2026 - Some ingredients are talked about everywhere - in creams, oils and trends. But in soap, performance speaks louder than promises. Tallow is the hero of soap making. It gives soap structure, glide and a dense, creamy lather, creating a wash that is effective yet gentle. Tallow soap can be wonderful for the skin, depending on how it's made and the simpler the ingredients, the more elegant the result. Learn more
